What's the legality of using music samples when creating a song?
I'm throwing some beats together at home and I want to use some music samples that are approximately 10 seconds long, taken from copyrighted songs. I'm not doing this for profit, just a hobby, but I may eventually want to distribute my music to friends and whatnot. What are the rules regarding music sampling?
Answers:
I have to agree with coventry. Usually, less than 10 seconds is okay. There had been some rap songs with sampling from I dream of jeanie, knight rider and the bollywood movie Naseeb. The pieces taken were repeated over and over.

Even though it's a hobby right now, you never know where your music will lead.I would try to get permission from the artist(hard to do)and give them credit on your CD.
Vanilla Ice's version of PLAY THAT FUNKY MUSIC WHITE BOY started out as a hobby and wound up on hid CD and he was later sued
As long as the clip is 30 seconds or less, they have no claim to royalties. Neat huh?
