What is the UK legal limit on the size of the blade for a knife, would a sheath knife be legal?

If i had a bona fide reason would it be legal for me to carry a knife?

Not sure of blade length, but keep in mind that active self defense is illegal in Britain, from what I've heard. I hear that if you even "fashion a weapon" for self defense, you go to jail.

There was a story of an old lady who used her cane to beat away a mugger. She got jail.
