Energy Bill?

Have a roommate who went on tour with his band for a month. We are both paying 50% rent and utilities. He comes back and says he shouldn't have to pay for the power bill becuase he was gone. What control do I have in when he decides to leave for the month? Is this fair, or should he have to pay?

Answers:
just between me and you, who does this guy think he is. I guess he should have remembered to shut off hot water tank & refegorator before he left. It just figures most wanta be stars are so self centered and completely out of reality that comming back down to earth is close to impossible. You need to wake this guy up. There is only one way he might come back to the real world. #1 take all past bills conculate the difference while he was there as to when he was gone. So lets say electric was 100 dollars every month he was actualy there. While he was gone the electric was 72 dollards. Now minus the differance of 28 dollares from the 72 that leaves 44 dollars and he pays half, 22 dollars. Insist he pays his fare share or he can get out. geez musicians and their outer limits,ddddddddddddddddeeeeeee...

he shouldn't pay the bill
your bill should have been smaller unless he has stuff going in his room while he was away so next time tell him to unplug everything but you use it so its your bill.
The best way I've found to deal with it is to count the refrigerators, as they are the appliances that use the most energy. Water heaters, too, if you don't have gas. And electric dryers.

Anyway, it's true that your bill should be less if your roommate was gone, and maybe he should pay a little (did he have any food in the freezer?) but not half. Do you have a contract that stipulates that you are splitting the rent and utilities 50/50? If so, he has to pay.

I guess it depends on how much you want him to continue to be your roommate how much slack you decide to cut him..
