Is it legal to "egg" or "pie" somebody?

Fred Phelps and his band of brainwashed zealots are planning to protest the funerals of the victims of the bridge collapse in Minneapolis. They're the people who go soldiers' funerals carrying signs that say "God Hates America", "God Hates F@gs", and "Thank God For 9/11".

Can I throw eggs, pies, or use super-soaker squirt guns on these idiots and not get in trouble?

Answers:
I'd be very careful because you will be breaking the law. But if they come to Texas I'll pay them a visit also. They are the true scum of the earth. At the minimum you could make a sign protesting them and calling them what they are and go out and protest at the same time. And while you are there you can call them all kind of names. And I'd carry a couple of little airhorns in my pocket.. You can buy them at a boat store or even Walmart for 5 bucks. That'll disrupt the little pukes. But I'd be very careful not to disrupt the event planned for soliders or victims. Unless I could stand in the way of these creeps. Let them push you out of the way and you charge them with assault.

No. It's assault.

Although I understand your sentiments 100%.
no, you will get in trouble for pies or eggs and very likely for the water as well
yes it is against the law and they will press charges. I live in KS and I am ashamed that he is from KS too. But they are within their rights to express their views and opinions as long as they follow the law. They always follow the law. Just about everyone in KS has tried to think of a way to stop them, but they are always careful. They also always have some one with a video camera taping. So if you do this, they will most likely get you on tape.
I think that you actually might be able to get charged with assault. My question is why are they protesting the funerals. How did the victims have anything to do with what happened to them.
No, and it would only bring even more indignity to an occassion that should never be violated in this way. There has to be a special place in hell for people like Fred Phelps and his followers.
Unfortunately, the same First Amendment that we enjoy every time we write a letter to our congressperson or watch CNN also applies to the Phelps church, which I personally believe are the ones sure to burn in Hell with gasoline shorts on.

We might hate everything they say (they even protest military funerals with this same smack, holding up signs that say "Thank God for Dead Soldiers"!), but they have to be allowed to say it, or everything we stand for as a free society is for nothing.

We can protest as well, and counter their hate with love, but if you egg or pie them (which they surely deserve), then you'll be the one going to jail, and they'll go home to their holes to plan another protest, maybe a 5-year-old's birthday party or something.

If you really want to show them, organize a bigger and better counter-protest. But take the high road, please.
