You might as well just give him the money back and avoid it altogether. If he does try to take you to court; lawyer and court fees will cost far more than the $190... When you get it back, you could always try and resell it to someone else (and make it clear that it is sold "as-is" and there are no refunds).
Did you keep all of the emails back and forth between you two? If you did, print them all out for your records and see if you ever did say you would give a refund. If you did say so, then you are kind of required to. If you never said that you'd give him a refund, then confront him about it (politely!!). Forward him the entire dialogue of emails between you and let him see for himself. He'll probably give up right then and there.
If you deleted the emails, then there is no proof of you saying you'd offer a refund or not, and you're probably walking on eggs with this guy. I recommend that when you sell something in the future, keep all the emails just in case. And take multiple high-quality pictures of anything that you sell showing that it is in good, working condition. Just in case you are ever taken to court, it will help out a lot.
If the battery worked fine for you, you probably never thought to mention anything about it and didn't say anything about a refund. But if it worked for you, I don't know what would have changed by the time this guy got it. He probably regrets buying it or something and just wants to get the $190 back to spend on something else. You never know, maybe he lost his job or something even and is just trying to scrape together as much money as he can, and refunds on fancy phones are some quick cash... So don't be too hard on the guy.
At least make him pay for shipping to send it back to you though. Don't take it personally.
Good luck!
Treat him as you would want to be treated.
