I have a question about ethics?

I have to write a paper about my ethical development. I don't want help with it. My question is I'm not exactly sure what ethics are. What exactly are ethics. Are ethics my views on gun control, the death penalty or abortion? Is that considered ethical views? I'm confused. I've been trying to do research online but all I can find are seminars. I just want to know what ethics are.

Answers:
Ethics are your morals. What you truly belive about right and wrong. When push comes to shove, what would you stand up for? What would you refuse to give in to? What would you be willing to sacrifice for no matter what the cost? Those are your ethical values. It's your moral compass in life. hope this helps. H.

Probably should concentrate more on the teachings you follow to arrive at your views. Read some on Kant, Chesterfield, Gandhi, Jesus, etc.
dixiechic hit the nail on the head. Follow her advice. Having taken an ethics class, I have nothing to add to her advice.
Ethics are more related to a sense of what is fair and just in the world. Think of ethics as a sort of a moral code that you choose to live by not related directly to any particular political agenda (though it definitely plays a role in forming your political opinions.) I hope that isn't too confusing. Good luck on your paper.
I think of ethics as binding rules or guidelines that professionals are obligated to follow in their jobs and ethics rules seem to mostly apply to people who have jobs that involve taking care of other people or their money or medical issues. Lawyers, doctors, marriage counselors and guardians all are bound by ethics rules and if they violate them their licensing boards can take your license away. The Amercian Bar Association has a code of ethics for lawyers and the American Medical Association has one for doctors. and I think most of them involve or are designed to increase accountablity and the public's trust and respect of the profession and to discourage some in a profession from taking advantage of their clients. I think of ethics as profession specific and the rules are not really about morality or political opinions though they can have implications for both. My sense of what ethics are comes simply from the fact that the only ethical codes I know of are those for lawyers and doctors and psychologists. Attaching a few links for you. Hope it helps.

To get some idea of what ethics means, you could read the column by Randy Cohen (The Ethicist) in the Sunday New York Times Magazine section. His column is in the form of questions and answers on ethcial questions for practical situations and will give you some ideas. Today's column dealt with resposnisbility for damage to a car near a baseball field and with a reporter being ask to write a letter to his own newspaper. You might want to look at some of the columns in the last few weeks.
