Do the defenses of Alberto Gonzales by conservatives bother anyone besides myself?
Bill Clinton committed perjury. There is no doubt of this and conservatives went into hang em high mode. Myself included because I felt he had violated the public trust. Now we have similar situations with both Gonzales and Libby. Libby was convicted and Gonzales probably will be also if a Special Prosecutor is appointed and now conservatives appear to be in total defense mode.
The question is do you believe in equal justice for all or not. And don't talk to me about how this is all political because so was the Clinton impeachment.

Many lies have been told to the American people and to Congress, under Oath!
When Clinton did it, and it involved an affair long before he was president, they wanted him impeached!
Gonzales is doing it under oath to the Congress of the United States, and those same people who bashed Clinton, are trying to deny any culpability on the part of the AG, who has been caught in not 1, but several lies!!
It is not fair or even handed! At least Clinton wasn't lying about something that had to do with UNCONSTITUTIONAL actions!

They are not real conservatives. They are just Republicans.
The top levels of the various cabinet agencies are political positions. These people are place there by the president and serve at his pleasure. No problem. Below that are career people who are not loyal, first and foremost, to the president. They expect to still be in their jobs when the next president take office. It may not be a perfect arrangement, but it's hard to think of anything better under current circumstances. This administration has been deliberately trying to undermine this.
It's only one of so many red flags that have popped up during this president's terms. Really, it's almost over now. Maybe Alberto Gonzalez will be indicted for something or other. Perjury, I suppose.
but for all the breaches of faith we have watched and endured, we surely should have had something bigger than this happening by now. It's really distressing
Yes, it appears that republicans believe that republicans should be held above the law.
Bill Clinton did not commit perjury in the legal sense. To legally be guilty of perjury, you have to lie under oath about something that pertains to the case that you are testifying in. He lied about having sex in the White House in a civil case in Arkansas, which does not meet the legal definition of perjury.
I don't believe that our government is fair. Scooter Libby lies and gets jail time only to have a "get out of jail free" card from the President. Bill Clinton got a job from a willing, consenting adult, lied and went through an impeachment process, Pres. Bush told us there were weapons of mass destruction, killed a dictator and has allowed thousands of US troops to die...and there were no weapons of mass destruction. So I don't expect anything from Gonzales, he doesn't remember anything, which we all know is a lie.
