What is the first step in taking legal action in landlord tenant court?
I have lived in this apartment for one month of my 12-month lease. I'm miserable. It was renovated very cheaply, so I'm having all sorts of problems with the place. I've taken pictures, video, and written letters, to no avail. I'm wanting to take legal action and see if I have a decent case. Do I need a lawyer before I go to landlord tenant court, if not, do I just call the court, or show up in court, I have no idea how to get this process started! Any advice would be appreciated.

It really depends on where you live but there should be a landlord and tenant board of your state/province. You can file a greivence with them. You should be covered under a landlord/tennant act.

this one is a link for Ontario, Canada but you should be able to find something similar.
call the home owners assosiation. even though you don't own the place you can prove that the landlord is a slum lord and the home owners assosiation can help you with getting everthing started and they are there for us renters.
Good Luck!
Talk to a lawyer, even if you don't hire one. Also, county and city governments have landlord/tenant offices to help you in that kind of situation.
