Is it plead or pleaded when used in a sentence?

When someone says, "They pleaded guilty to a lesser charge," is this the appropriate english? Or is it that they plead guilty? Pleaded just sounds wrong.

Answers:
They pleaded guilty .. they are pleading guilty, they will plead guilty.

It's pleaded, but pled is used more commonly and is generally accepted.
if its past tense its pleaded, if they're talking about a future event of a plea its plead
Pleaded is a past tense, but pled can be pronounced two ways, each of which have different meanings/tenses-"pled" which is past tense, and "pleed" which is future tense. Pleading is current tense.
"Joe" pleaded guilty or "Joe" pled guiltly. Either way.
Pepper is incorrect. They plead guilty (past tense), or they are pleading guilty (present tense), or they will plead (future tense) guilty. Can I have my gold star now?
In English English it would be "pleaded". However, in American English it is "Plead" as they are unable to speak the language properly.
"He pleaded..."

"He will plead..."

The verb "plead" is to be used only in the present tense. Pleaded is the correct past tense. In American English, however, it can go either way, where in the past tense it is pronounced "pled"...
