Provisional License in DMV California?
Well I am 16 and recently received my driver's license. On the back of it, it says I cannot transport passengers under 25 without an adult over 25, if I am caught, what would happen? I heard cops are usually easy with this, but what do they do to enforce this, and what are the consequences?
Also, is it legal to drive a friend or relative's car since you're not insured on it?
Answers:
Never assume that cops usually go easy on something like this. You have to assume that you will be given a ticket if caught since you are technically breakig the law. However, you may get lucky and a cop would let you go with just a verbal warning.
This is a fairly new law here in California. When I got my license at 16 I drove my friends everywhere and vice versa.
From my understanding, if you are caught then you will get a ticket and probably a small fine. (Much like a speeding ticket) A judge may however choose to revoke your provisional license until you turn 18.
They could easily enforce this law. All they have to do is be parked outside next to any California highschool after school an they could catch many violators.
As for driving someone else's vehicle, if a person has more that just the basic liability insurance for their car then they usually have coverage for uninsured drivers. That's to cover someone not listed as a regular driver for that vehicle. Be careful driving a friend's car especially because I guarantee that if you were to get in an accident in their car that your friend's parents are going to sue you and your parents for the damages.
California streets and freeways can be very dangerous. Always be aware of the cars around you and on the freeways especially, watch ahead of the cars in front of you for break lights. And remember, semi-trucks are BIGGER than you and can do serious damage! Give them the right of way. And one more thing, do not yell or flip off other drivers. It's not worth it! You never know what they may try to do to you.
Congrats on your license and drive safely!!
