Can a US subpoena be enforced in Canada?
I am a Canadian citizen. I lived in the US for 7 years. I was witness to a serious crime when I lived in the US. I made a statement to the police at the time. This crime was very traumatic to me, so much so that I moved back to Canada.
Anyway, the criminal trial continues in the US. The defendent is someone I am very close to. Even though what he did was horrible, I do not want to see him go to jail for a very long time. I want to leave that part of my life behind me. I have recently received a subpoena to go to court. I DO NOT want to go. What are the ramifications for me if I ignore this US order. I do not want to go

Better contact a barrister. You are dealing with the laws of two different countries and you could end up in a trick bag.
Friend or not, this person comitted a horrible crime and should be punished for it! It is your moral obligation to see that justice is done no matter what country your from!
If I saw my brother cold-bloodedly murder someone, regardless of his reasoning, do you think I could sleep nights knowing that he might get away with it and possibly repeat the crime?
As a human being (you are human right?) DO YOUR DUTY!
I don't know about the ramifications, but I do know that running away from something never solved anything and if your friend has committed a horrible crime then he probably needs to do his time accordingly.
