Is that legal to USE NON-ENGLISH RECEIPT FOR MY RENT to rent a room IN THE U.S.?
I am gonna rent a room off-campus with some other people. When I payed my deposit, the landlord gave me the receipt which was written in German (they've lived in German for couple or years...). This really didn't make sense to me. Then their explaination for me was that could make sure the receipt was given by her daughter ( her daughter lives in this house too, and we all pay our rents to her)...This really didn't make sense to me! I can't read German, even though the things her daughter will write on that (such as "deposit" or "water bill" things like that) is English, but I rent a room in the US, why should I get a receipt in German?!
Is this legal? Should I accept this kind of receipt or should I argue with them? I wanna keep our relationship though, but I feel bad when I am treated like that...

Tell them your tax person/financial aid officer needs all the receipts in English. That way the blame is off you.

It is legal to write anything in any language. Even German. The Supreme Court ruled on that point 90 years ago.
If you want the receipt in a different language, that's a private business transaction between you and them.
They parents lived in Germany, come from germany, were immigrants and now in the US, their daughter spent some time there growing up (most Germans speak some English), etc.etc.
A normal business person would realize that if any issue came up you could easily contest anything. You simply tell them you want all communications and reciepts to be in english. Because who knows what you may have signed for and under what conditions? Sounds hinky or odd. My thinking is that it is actually your room mate that has issues. Best to find out now.
Personally if it was my daughter I would call and get to the bottom of it as an older male voice can usually get to the bottom line. If you don't have that Mom can work as well. Bottom line is something is seriously wrong and I would rather tackle it rather than find out you have to suddenly move.This all could be nothing.. but I would want to know as nobody gives reciepts in another language.
