Could any patriotic Countyrmen(am I am a citizen of the U.S.A. but you can substitute your own nation)...?

NOT support an act of torture against a captured military combatant that would reveal a lead on an upcoming terrorist strike, thus averting dozens to thousands of your fellow countymen's deaths for the sake of not torturing that said enemy? If so, why?

Answers:
Naturally, any idiot can tell you that hurting one life to save 12 equal lives is worth the cost. The problem here is that your question assumes that the torture has a 100 percent accuracy of saving lives. Enacting a blanket policy of torture is likely going to outweigh the benefits. This is an issue of line drawing. To tolerate something like torture, which is egregious, immoral, and arguably contrary to the US Constitution, we better be damn sure that it will save lives.

The question is not why would someone disagree with torturing one criminal to save dozens or thousands of people; the question is how on earth could you be sure that you could save those lives.

The world is not nearly as black and white as conservatives would have people believe.

24 is just a TV show, dude.
In a fantasy world or a novel, yes. In reality, torture never works.

Let's say that you are an American CIA agent, posing as a subcontractor in Iraq. Your mission is to assassinate the 'leaders' of Al Qeda in Iraq. You are kidnapped by insurgents while working your cover. They torture you incessantly, thinking that you are working to undermine a particular political group. All of their questions are focused on politics, the Iraqi gov't, your contacts in the gov't, the Iraqi military, etc. You know nothing of these things because you are just there to kill the Al Qeda leadership.

You've been beaten, water-boarded, had electrodes attached to your testicles, etc, etc, etc. What would you tell them? Bearing in mind that you don't have any knowledge about what they're asking, you'd make stuff up to stop the pain, wouldn't you? Making stuff up protects your comrades while sending the enemy off on wild goose chases, right? How valuable would the information that they receive from you be? Same holds true for any tortured prisoner.
torture has been proven to produce more false admissions than true ones. Just think about it, if you were being tortured you would tell the torturers what you thought they wanted to hear, not he truth, you just want the torture to be done, you will say anything
am English and without a doubt I am pretty OK with the whole torture ethic....

You see with regard to all those that are currently serving jail time for the pictures and the abuse that was dished out over there in the jails.....I was stunned that there was actually people that felt they deserved being charged....this I will remind you is at the SAME time that they beheaded USA citizens and flashed that around the world on the Internet...so lets see take a pic of people making fun of them and pointing at their pee pees or hacking off heads.....GUESS which side I would rather be on and it ain't the chopping off head side.

And for all the ones that say that I will be up in arms IF they did this torture stuff to the guys USA / allied troops here's a faffing news flash THEY are already....How about Scott Spicier [sp] who has YET to be returned from the last time we was there..reports have clearly been made that he was grossly tortured with no outcome of whether he is alive or dead...
Ok Akbar, here's a hot poker up your poop-chute. Tell us where the nuke is. As soon as we find it and disarm it, we'll pull it out. Bet that'd get a straight answer pretty fast.
