In the state of Utah, a friend of mine(female) was sent to jail for DUI, and the roommate(male)sold he things.

She was sent to jail for 90 days. When she got out, she wanted to get her things back. He said she could get in any time. We were supposed to get it today but we just found out that he sold most of it and gave the rest away. We're in Utah. What are the laws? What should we do? Should we call the cops? Can we have him charged with theft?

The value of the stuff (furniture) is over $5,000. We just found out about this so we have no idea what to do. Please help. Would really like to know what the specific laws are concerning this and if they're different in different areas. This is Layton, Utah. Thank you very much for the help.

Answers:
Call a good criminal lawyer also.

The roommate ought, at least be willing to reimburse her every cent, for the sold or lost property.

If not, theoretically, the roommate could be charged with grand theft and/or fraud.

Hopefully, it won't come to that.

I think her mom is doing the most logical thing. They will be able to advise her on the next step to take.
