Answers:
In australia we have system where you can apply at the local Courthouse to pay a debt off by installments. You explain your situation to the clerk and give them a list of your committments and the amount you can afford to pay off the debt in monthly installments. It is then passed on to the person you owe the money and in neartly all circumstances it is approved.
I do not know if you the same system where you live, but it would certainly be a place to check out your options.
Also in Australia, debt collectoers are not allowed to harass you,it may be in your best interest to check that out as well if you are suffering harassment from debt Collecters.
And yes I do understand where you are coming from I have been there myself.
You can always approach who you owe the money to and try and come to an arrangement with the company involved as they see some form of payment, although smaller is better then nothing.
Good luck.
If you haven't been sued yet, call them and make a payment arrangement. I used to manage a credit bureau that had an attorney on retainer and many law suits were filed if the debt was over a certain amount. What you owe is well over that amount. Different states---different laws. In Calif. wages and bank accounts (except SSI), are attached. Also, if you own an auto or home or property, a lien is placed on them. Work with the Company to settle the debt...sometimes you can even reduce it, but not usually. Your credit rating will also be affected. Whatever you do, don't ignore it!
