Driving Etiquette - 2 lanes merging to one?

Scenario: You approach a section of road that you know merges from 2 lanes down to 1. It's rush hour. There are 50 plus cars in line in the lane being merged into and no cars in the other lane.

If you race to the front of the line and cut into a gap at the front, which of the nine levels of he!! will you be banished to?

Answers:
Give gap, take gap.

If you race to the front and cut in.. you are banished to the 10th level of hell reserved specifically for people who do such things - right beside those who have 27 items in the 10 items or less express lane at the supermarket.

Whichever is the worst.
I have seen big trucks run over idiots that do that!
When two lanes are opened, people need to use both lanes to the merge point and then take turns. If everyone moves over too soon, you will end up adding an extra mile+ with only one lane! (depending on how heavy the traffic is) I know it is hard, but people have to resist the urge to move over too soon and people have to take turns. Traffic would be so much better.
You're talking about the asshole lane! That is, the lane assholes use to get ahead. And, yes, if you do that, you're being an asshole.

It depends. If I'm full of hate, because idiots have been cutting me off and going slow in the left lane, and because in any line of 50 cars there are probably 10 weinies who will let people in ahead of them, and I'm in a hurry, I'll go for it. I will also be doing this in full knowledge that it is a d!ckhead thing to do.

Otherwise, I might go in the long lane, but never allow anyone to merge in front of me.

Or, my favorite, when I'm feeling ornery, I will go in the open lane, but only go as fast as the full lane, keeping my place behind the car I would otherwise have been behind. It drives the assholes crazy.
What your supposed to do is slow down (or stop if necessary) and merge into traffic.

For obvious reasons, the practice of racing ahead of traffic in the lane that's about to be eliminated is dangerous, although I see it all the time. What happens when the other aggressive driver, who happens to be in the lane being merged into, decides to race ahead to stay in front of you?
