While on vacation, someone went into my house and use my phone to call Mexico. am I responsible?
They did not have permission to use my phone. Verizon say I owe the bill.

Well, unless you can find out who did it and force them to pay, good luck. How would anyone get in your house? If you have a police report on a burglary or break/enter, that might help.
no you are not mail them proof you were out of town, like a hotel receipt.
If you know who the person is sue them in small claims court.
You left out a lot of details. Are you saying some stranger broke into your house just to use your phone? That's kind of hard to believe. My guess is you probably know this person and maybe allowed them access to your home (ie by leaving them a key).
You’re responsible for paying the bill. If people could get out of paying their phone bill by saying "someone else made the call and I didn’t give them permission" then no one would ever have to pay their phone bill.
If you know who made the call (and I assume you probably do) then tell them to give you the money to pay it or you’re going to take them to court.
Sometimes they will waive the fee's depending on the circumstances but unfortunately your probably stuck with the bill, My cousin's daughter (2 yrs) racked up a huge bill just randomly dialing numbers of her mothers cell phone, she tried to explain her situation and her cell phone provider though they didn't seem to care and asked that she pay when her bill is due, Although you have a slightly different situation you might want to file a police report.
