Why is it illegal to eat dog and horse in most states?

I lived in Asia for eight years. I ate dog all the time and never thought anything about it except that it tastes good with rice. Then I came home to America and found that it is illegal to eat animals that are classified as domestic animals. Wow, I couldn't believe it. What is the point of that?
I have asked people about it but have not gotten any reasonable answer. Some people told me that dogs are too cute to eat. Well, I think rabbits are cute too. But you can eat them. Other people said that horses are too valuable because they are used for racing. I pointed out the fact that only a few are used for racing and lobster is also expensive.
One person said that the FDA and USDA don't have the resources to regulate every form of livestock farming. There is probably some truth in that. But in that case, the government should inprove its agencies rather than making things illegal. Can anyone tell me the real reason some animals are classified as domestic and cannot be eaten?

Answers:
The people have spoken. The laws covering the sale and use of meat products vary from one state to another depending on what is considered acceptable in each location. This is a good example of the implementation of a law being done according to cultural sensitivities rather than logical practicalities.

Go back to Asia we love our animals as pets you thing!
would you eat your best friend?
eeeeeeeewwwwwww
let see um it is nasty it is groos and no one likes eating pets who would ever as such question anyways i no people differ foods but dogs i am sorry to nag but i am vegetarian
Becuz eatin Fido an Benji an Old Yeller is evil.
Different countries have different cultures. You can't be morally right on this issue unless you are a vegetarian, but even then, someone will tell you why stop at animals, I think carrots are cute too, etc. This is just an irrelevant question. You eat what you can find on a country's menu and you abide by the laws of that country, or you vote to change them (maybe not in China).
I've never heard that it's illegal to eat either ... at least not in the state of Washington ... and I've eaten dog here when I was at a Native American 'Pow Wow' on the coast ... and I used to be able to buy horse meat all the time. I can't buy dog meat (most people would be 'ill' if they thought about eating dogs) and the reason I can't buy horse meat here anymore is that it is an 'extremely cheap' meat here since people don't want to eat horses ... but if they slaughter the horses and send the meet to France, it's a 'delicacy' and they get a huge amount of money per pound.
As for that 'business' about dogs and horses being 'domestic' ... so are the cattle we eat and the chickens and rabbits ... so I suggest that you do some good 'research' to find out the 'real reasons' you can't find dog meat or horse meat in YOUR market ... but it's not the FDA or the USDA's fault, so don't 'blame them' anymore, okay.
because many people have dog pets and see them as family so they say eating dog is wrong, and the answers before mine are called for different customs for different countries. And eating a dog is no different than eating a cow except you cows aren't usually kept as friends.
I dont believe it is illegal to eat it. It is illegal to sell it.

It is not regulated and tested by the USDA, and not considered safe.

If you raise your own horses or dogs for food purposes, I dont see any reason you can't slaughter and butcher them yourself.
Just don't get caught by someone who would turn you in for animal cruelty.

In america we have plenty sources for meat, and choose to not eat domeSticated animals.

Sure some people will have a chicken or a pig for a pet, but it is not that commonplace.

Whatever recipe you have for dog, just use it with beef and I am sure you will get near the same taste.

What flavor does dog meat have?
Does it taste like chicken like everything else??
If so, why eat dog? EAT MORE CHICKEN.
I know the culture you come from doesn't naturally see dogs as pets, but the fact is canines were bred to be companions to humans since the Neolithic era LONG before any Asian people started eating them. Anyhow, the way it works here in the U.S. is that it's illegal to slaughter and prepare ANY animal for human consumption unless the meat is inspected and approved by the government. While it's not actually illegal to eat dogs or horses, the government simply does not provide any facilities or inspectors for that kind of meat which effectively makes it impossible to legally sell it. It's not that anybody has specifically banned horsemeat or dogmeat, it's just that nobody has ever lobbied the government to allow it. Interestingly, it's considered illegal for a farmer to slaughter and barbecue an animal for even his own personal consumption without going though this inspection process, although the law is routinely ignored in this case.

- EDIT -

Contrary to what some people think, horsemeat is actually healthier and leaner than beef. It is routinely sold for human consumption in Europe (as well as Canada, I believe). I really think it ought to be sold here in the U.S. as well, but it seems nobody around here likes the idea of eating Mister Ed.
.
You would be well advised to not eat the meat from either of those animals in the (Or from) U.S. The reason is that they are not considered food animals here, and contain many medicines and other chemicals which are toxic to humans.
