Not that much has changed since 1989, at least in terms of process.

Grand jury is criminal -- filing a complaint is usually civil.

And the process differs for civil versus criminal.

In civil -- plaintiff files complaint; defendant respond either with affirmative defenses and/or counter-claims and/or motions saying the claims in invalid. Then, depending on pre-trial motions, there may be pre-trial hearings on various issues.

In criminal -- either the prosecutor files a criminal complaint (aka an "information") or has the grand jury approve an indictment, depending on the nature of the offenses. Then, the defendant is arrainged (notified of the charges) and has a bail hearing. Again, depending on pre-trial motions (usually by the defenses), there may be pre-trial hearings on various issues. Then the trial, and if convicted, sentencing.

And it's quite likely the process hasn't really changed much since 1989 -- you can use the old chart as the basis, and just check the relevant laws to determine if any details have altered.
