Can you get sued/fined by cutting a part of a tree?

My dad was chopping off some roots of a tree near our drive way, and he said it's putting huge cracks. My neighbor said to my dad that the city hall can some how fine/sue him for cutting some of the roots of the tree.Is it true? And the land/space we're living on is not our property. (mobile home)

Answers:
it depends on the laws where you live.

It the tree roots pose a hazard ( like people will trip on it, or on the cracks it creates) then your father had a good reason. but it could all depend on the judge he gets.

you or your dad can call city hall and ask who to talk to about this-- just to find out what the rules are.

its true
I would say if its not your property then you can be sued. Talk to whoever owns the property.
WHAT YOU DO ON YOUR PROPERTY IS YOUR BUSINESS.
If it's not your property then yes, you can get sued.
as long as its in your property boundry its fine but if the tree is out your boundry and it also depends if it is an indiginous tree, if it is you have to ask your counsel for permission. if its an allien tree then they will be glad you ripped it out. well at least thats what our law is here
If you are renting the property - you must secure authorization in order to make changes or remove trees.

Just call the landlord - have him handle the tree - it's his driveway to protect, you know?

If the tree is on city property - the city is responsible for it.
no, unless he kills it, or it falls and causes damage, Or if its a historical tree
