Is it required to have a drug screen for newborn when it is born.?
Indiana is the state I am wondering about.
Answers:
In kentucky all newborns are tested for drugs. You should be able to go on Indiana's government website and it should tell you/
Only if the mother is a drug addict.
Then she can be charged with child endangerment.
only if the mother is using drugs and some states removes the child from the mother if drugs are found in the new born
If they have reason to suspect, then yes. I know someone who was ready to go home with her baby, and the nurse noticed the baby twitch. So they drug tested immediately and found meth amphetamines in the baby's system. She got the baby taken away immediately, and now goes to drug classes and counseling. It has been over a year, and they still will NOT let her have her child back.
I think it depends on the local laws.
Where I live (Texas), I believe all babies are given drug tests at birth (and removed from the home if they test positive for illegal drugs). However, other states might require some just-cause for the test.
only if they know for a fact the mother is a drug user..
The hospital can only drug screen a new born if the mother is know to have used drugs during pregnancy. They have to have proof and have an order from the court.
I live in IL. I have a friend who was routinely drug tested at the beginning of her pregnancy, and tested positive for marijuana. After her daughter was delivered, she was immediately tested for drugs. Her test came back negative. I think it depends on the state you live in and if you tested positive at any time during your pregnancy.
From everything I know, all states now test newborns for drugs, routinely.. I know they tested my baby & I didnt test postive for anything while I was pregnant.
Your best bet it to fess up to your doc & see if he/she can help you get off the drugs & get help. At least then you might have a chance at getting to be a Mom to your baby instead of a druggie who lost their baby.
