Would a person be severely penalized for this?
So here's the scenario:
My girlfriend is at college in Mississippi. I go to a college in Pennsylvania. Let's say some guy manages to slip a roofie into her drink, then takes her home and rapes her.
I get on a plane, find him, and beat the living sh*t out of him. I mean break his nose, maybe knock a tooth out...
Would I get off easy in court? I mean, he raped the girl I love!
This is all hypothetical, of course. I mean, if it really did happen, the guy would be dead. No question.

You can be charged and convicted of assault and battery. Although in sentencing the judge or jury could hear the mitigating circumstances and give a lighter punishment, the US legal system does not allow vigilante justice. Also, the level of premeditation with getting on a plane and traveling a distance to commit the act would work against you.
old saying 2 wrongs don't make a right. Attempted murder charge would not get off easy.
That would be taking the law into your own hands, something which the police seem to frown upon.
If it were all up to me, I'd give you a medal.

Simple assault a misdomeanor you might get probation at the most.
A good lawyer might be able to get it dismissed due to the circumstances and the judge might send you to anger management class before he dismisses the case just to cover his ***
