While out of work on a medical leave i filed for short term disability and was denied why would i be denied if

Answers:
You have the right to request from the insurance company that they explain why you are denied (usually you need to file an appeal)

Some places will attempt to deny everything. Also, if it was work related, they may deny because it should be covered by workers comp.

Ask your job. They may know why you were denied. Maybe you havent worked enough to pay for disability benefits. Who knows.
Are you sure you have short term disability insurance? I think most employers only offer long term.

If anything, you can contact the insurance company and ask them why you were denied.
