How effective is a polygraph test?
for example, could someone like barry bonds take one to find out if he really did steroids? or anyone else depending on their crimes and what not. are they really that effective? i've heard you can cheat on them?

polygraph, or "lie-detector" tests generally monitor changes in pulse. they will ask you questions like "is your name ***" or "is today ***" (and of course, it is). when you answer honestly, it takes your pulse as your normal rate. then when you lie, your pulse accelerates and it detects it as a lie. it is theoretically possible to beat it.
i don't know how they account for other things that cause your pulse to go up, like emotions, when you are still telling the truth.
of course, it's easier to bribe the people conducting the test... jk
You can cheat a polygraph test if you are mentally ill to the point that you truly believe the lies you make up.
No they are not that accurate or effective test. There is also one rumors regarding polygraph test that those with intelligence training like the Marines corps special units can lick this kind of test with flying colors.
One effective test thou which I donot have any idea if they still apply or enforce is the TRUTH SERUM, which is liquid in kind not this kind of all wire hook on the person.
