Texas becomes the twenty-eighth state on December 29, 1845, after being an independent republic since 1836. Mexico breaks diplomatic ties with the United States over the annexation of Texas, and dispute over the border leads to the Mexican War (1846-1848), in which Mexico loses territory including California and the Southwest.
December 29, 1845, it was the 28 th state to become part of the US
1845
29 December 1845 -- U. S. President James Polk followed through on a campaign platform promising to annex Texas, and signed legislation making Texas the 28th state of the United States.
Texas entered the Union in 1845,Texas requested annexation by the USA in 1836,but was refused by Jackson and laterby Van Buren.
Texas has been kinda flip floppy on whether it wants to be part of America or not hehe.

It seceeded from Mexico in 1838 and was its own independent republic for a while. Then on Dec. 29, 1845 it became an official US state (the 28th i believe). In 1850 Texas became a bunch smaller since there was a compromise where they ended up giving some land to New Mexico. Then in 1861, Texas decided it didn't want to be part of the US after all, and joined the Confederacy. It didn't become a US state again until after the Civil War.

Though, if you've ever been to certain parts of Texas, you'd think they're no longer a state... all their flags and whatnot.

Silly Texas.
