What is done at a pre trial?

Answers:
dates and deadlines are set. More or a less an agreed upon schedule is made.

That's usually where a judge hears the facts of the case from both sides, and makes a ruling as to whether or not there's enough evidence to proceed to trial.
A magistrate (Judge) determines how the trial will be conducted and instructs the Prosecuting and Defense attorneys as to what evidence will be allowed into the trial. The court sets a date and the Lawyers must have their cases complete and present their arguments at the trial.
For a criminal trial, the judge will read the accused the charges, ask for a plea, and set a trial date if the plea is not guilty.
