What can happen if my son's raised, sealed birth certificate was lost?

can anyone do anything with it? Identity theft? access to social security number or accounts.

Answers:
Nothing much will happen---it's only a piece of paper saying he was actually BORN. if they could access social security numbers by virtue of a birth certificate, wouldn't they be able to just by knowing a NAME of a person??? what you might want to do or if your son is 18 and over what HE would want to do is go to the town hall in the CITY HE WAS BORN IN and get another official copy of the certificate with the raised seal---it will cost between $10 and $20 per copy--- Someone COULD use it maybe to pose as him, but that is HIGHLY UNLIKELY.... I've lost 3 copies of the certificate and in 56 years NOTHING ever happened, no one ever used any of those copies for identify theft or anything else.... I didn't worry about it. and I'm STILL not worried about it.

the crafty criminal can do anything with that kind of document--you should file for another certificate and let them know it's lost. they may have suggestions as to what else you can do to minimize risk.
Ooh that's tricky. At first I thought, just go get another one from the county clerk where he was born. But identity theft is something. But people steal identities with less than an official birth cert. so what can ya do..
NO--SS number is not on it. He has to be born and reported as live birth to get SS number... In the state he was born--- in the Bureau of Vital Statistics is the birth certificate . Go on line or call and they will send you forms to fill out. There is a fee and presto in 1-2 months a new one. Might want to get two
I once had to go to the Social Security office once. While I was there, they actually explained how to obtain a replacement birth certificate, use it to get a new Social Security card, and use both to get a new drivers license. Note: The person asking had NO ID.
