How do i find out if someone truely has a contractor's license in california?

i had taken someone's word for it, but i want to double check without them knowing. what is a website or phone number i can check with based only on their name?

Under the sidebar for Consumers, there is a PDF file for instructions for searching for the Contractor by their business name, personnel name, or license number.

The easiest way, if the contractor is legit, is to ask them for their license number. If they can't provide it to you, then they are working illegally.

Why is it so important that they not know you're doing a background check?
