Rights and responsibilities?

of convicted criminals? Dont you agree that those in prison should have ONLY the basic rights of food, shelter, dignfied washing and toilet facilities, etc and NOTHING MORE!?

They gave up most of their rights when they willfully committed a criminal act so why should they even expect to have ANY rights at all??

Answers:
I agree 100% why should they have more than the basics it not a holiday camp and yes rehibilitate whilst there but sometimes I feel more is done for the offender than their victim, then perhaps one visit will be enough for most as I feel some can get insitutionalised so reoffend to go back in!

i agree fully. it has been proven that almost all the time criminals will re-offend so whats the point in spending our tax monay trying to rehabilitate them?? bring back capital punishment that will sort a few out!!
when in prison, food and water should not be a right, they should work for it. "no work no food" put ten to a cell and a bucket to pee and poo in. but if parents smacked their kids more often, there wouldn't be so many scum
I agree fully. How come as a law abiding citizen I have to pay for cable and they get to watch TV on MY DIME!
They should have the right to decent food and medical treatment.
good call, totally agree, but id say that it depends much on the crime, and the person, every case is different,
but for the serious crimes, ie, peadophillia, murder, rape, or something that ruins another persons life, they have no place in society, and should be permanantly removed and never return, and left to rot with the rats.
When you first arrive in prison, the only thing you get is the basics - room, shelter food, washing etc. This lasts for a while until you have proven that you are both behaving yourself and that you are taking part in prison life by attending classes/work or rehabilitative work.

It's called the honour system, and tries to teach people that if they cooperate they will make things easier for themselves and will be rewarded for doing so.

All those newspapers that report that prison is "like Butlins" choose to ignore these boring little facts and instead lie and lake you believe that you are handed a plasma screen TV, DVD and Playstation the second you walk through the door

Candy G: don't shoot the messenger. I am just giving an answer, which is what I thought this site was supposed to be about. I cannot answer for US prisons, as I have no experience of US prisons, so my answer is tailored to the UK which is where I do work.

And another thing you are wrong about is the three strikes rule. We have had that here for quiet a while: 3 violent crimes results in a life sentence (tariff to be set by a judge).
I totally agree with you..

and to the guy that is writing above me as a solicitor well for your info, that is NOT how it is here in the USA, they do pretty much get it all..and taking your theory a bit further how about all those a$$holes that when they get out have an open uni. degree which to be honest not many of us can afford but they get it for FREE.....its like pretty much everything in the UK has become the little sh*ts get the rewards and the ones that behave and don't break the laws have to plod along.....when the country STARTS rewarding the ones that do well MAYBE the shift in pride would astound you.

Maybe we could introduce the USA rule of 3 strikes and you are out.......or the one that says LIFE really is life...

regards and really good question scotslad
