Is it a requirement by law, that I have a mailbox at my home address?

I don't want to receive anymore USPS mail. I can access all of my necessities via email. Why should I have a physical box out front for the guy in the little white truck to stuff full of junk mail. I AM SICK OF IT!!!!

Answers:
I, like you, feel the same way, except for checks and such, I have no need for a home mailing address, and every Tuesday, I have about 14 pounds of "junk mail"(advertising circulars), which are crammed into an aluminum "batch-box" type mailbox, said mail I then have to pry out and go through to make sure there are no bills or checks inadvertantly mixed in with the junk stuff.

I did a little research and surprisingly, while you own the mailbox, the US government regulates it. if you have a physical address, then you MUST have a mailing address.

You CAN go to the Post Office and fill out a bunch of forms and they will suspend mail service to the address you give them, including bills, Holiday Cards, etc. But they do not reutrn it sender, they hold it for you and when you have enough, they will contact you to come pick it up.

Interestingly, you do NOT have the right to refuse certain types of mail, such as "junk mail" (at least every postal worker I've asked this question, has answered the same way, in the negative).

Contact your post master general for information on that.
No, but you should have a PO box to receive mail.
As a former Letter Carrier, I had to cope with several slobs who neglected to provide a receptacle for their mail. Some carriers would try to shove the mail under the door, other left it hanging, but the official USPS policy (not law) is to keep the mail on hold at the station until they provide a receptacle.

If you don't want mail, file a Change of Address notice that gives a bogus address, and send everything to the Dead Letter Office.
you need it (physical address) in case the government needs to contact you.. you don't need a mailbox, but some contact info like a PO box.. the last thing you want is to be summoned for jury duty and not know about it... then be arrested for not showing up :P
Really good question. I wish I could do what you're doing. If you have an address, according to our mailman-you need to have a secure location to put any mail that arrives. Yesterday I walked to the mailbox and everything was a throw away. It's good the landlord put a trash can next to the mailbox.
There are somethings that still come via snail mail: Property tax bills, red light tickets caught on camera, refund checks you weren't expecting (happened to me from the dentist), school letters, reminders for your 6 month dental check, subscription magazines, etc.
All I know is that I live in a rual area and the USPS will NOT deliever mail to my house and they give me a free PO Box. So I would say you do not need to have a mail box.
