Is there anyway to obtain health records of a deceased relative ?

I would like to find out more information out about my grandmother. I would like to open her medical records.

I have heard stories in the past that mention it is almost impossible to obtain medical records. I have also heard that you must go to court and it is costly.

The information I want cannot be obtained through asking my family . The only person alive is my mother and she only remembers or cares to offer few details.

If anyone has any information (web site or personal experiences to relate) please let me know. I live in the state of Illinois (not sure if that matters or not?)

Answer:
It wouldn't hurt to ask. The Doctor/patient privilege expires upon the death of the patient.

Generally No, these records belong to that person and the hospital
