How much money do Lawyers make?

Answer:
It depends on a number of factors. Attorneys in private practice make significantly more money than government lawyers. It also depends how large the firm is, how many hours you bill every month and how many clients you can bring in. A public defender starts at around $35,000. A civil trial attorney that bills 180 hours a month starts at between $45,000 and $100,000 per year. An attorney with 5 years experience makes between $60,000 and $150,000 per year.

After a number of years (usually 7) the firm can make you a partner, which means you receive a percentage of the company's profit. This process can be sped up by obtaining your own clients. The firm does not want to lose the revenue brought by your clients, so they want to keep you happy.

Partners can make $200,000 to $500,000 a year. A plaintiff's attorney that takes large cases can make millions of dollars per case, but it takes a lot of money to try a case and the lawyer must front the costs. A medical malpractice case costs about $100,000 in expert fees and other charges. Most plaintiff's attorneys try to establish a smaller practice at first and build up to larger cases.

The major positive of an attorney's salary is it rarely decreases meaning a lateral move will not result in a pay loss. The pay is usually pretty uniform among attorneys in an area. Also, raises come fast. I am an attorney practicing for 5 years and I make 3 times now than what I made when I started, few professions can show such an increase.

It depends on the lawyer. Some have low incomes and others quite high.
