Ramona is correct. So too, actually, is Maxx.

In the US, the 8th Amendment prohibits cruel and unusual punishment. As interpreted by the Supreme Court, that allows capital punishment (of adults) but does not allow the method to be more painful or dangerous that necessary.

So, while it may seem silly, it's just the way the laws work.

If they got an infection the ACLU might sue.
I asked my sister that, and she gave me a good answer, but i forgot it :P.
They want to lessen the chances of the needle
catching anything !
To cover their butts!

Let's say someone is laying on the gurney, they're strapping down and hookin up, the IV is already inserted but the drip hasn't gotten to stage two yet and the governor calls and gives a reprieve....then stays the execution.. they find that it was someone other than the condemned man who did the crime ..then 2 years later the inmate (who is still in jail on an unrelated crime) is found to have AIDS.. OOPSY
So that if the executioner pricks himself he doesn't get anything.
in case someone accidently sticks themself before sticking the person soon to become dead.
