Would I be entitled to maternity benefit?
I really hate my job,and I want to leave
I have been there for 18 months and am due to go on maternity leave in December.
If I were to start a new job soon would I still be entitled to maternity benefits with a new employer(providing anybody would actually employ me)I am 17 weeks pregnant
Answers:
you would be entitled to maternity benifits of the government, as long as you have your past payslips. although your new employer probably wont help you with this
no. usually benefits are on the condition that you have worked for your employer for six months by the time you are 29 wks pregnant. stick it out and look for another job when you've had the baby and are on maternity leave.
The best thing to do is to go this website
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/employment/e...
You can enter your personalised information here to get specific information regarding your rights. However, I don't believe you would be entitled to Statutory Maternity Pay as you would not have been working for the employer at a certain point in the pregnancy. However, you may be entitled to Maternity Allowance.
I'm assuming that you are in the UK. If you left your current job now and got another one by the time you came to go on maternity leave you would not have worked for your employer long enough to get maternity pay,(which is usually 90% of your wages for the first 6 weeks and £108 a week for the remaining 20 weeks) however you would get maternity allowance from the government this is 26 weeks at the flat rate of around £108 a week. You can start your maternity leave at 29 weeks if you want. You can keep pulling sickies until then, they can't do anything about it. Why do you hate your job? If they're being funny with you stand your ground. They can't sack you for being pregnant. Hope this helps.
NO!
dont change job now. wait till 1.5 months after childbirth.
Yes you would. In the UK at least (dunno about the USA!)
I think some of the people on this site are referring to Statutory Maternity Pay when they say you wouldn't get it if you left work now.
If you have been working for 26 out of the 66 weeks before your baby is due (doesn't have to be consecutive weeks or for the same employer) and earning at least £30 per week then yes you will be entitled to 39 weeks Maternity Allowance from the Government. Its about £112 per week. (last year it was 26 weeks at £108 per week but its gone up this year apparently).
You would not get Statutory Maternity Pay from an Employer if you started a new job now but you would still get Maternity Allowance (which is the same amount of money) as long as you met the conditions above.
Last year I was on sick leave for most of my pregnancy, left at 24 weeks pregnant and got Maternity Allowance from the Government.
