How to establish legal guardianship for my child?
After my child is born in Jan of 2008, about 2-3 months after I want to get my child baptized as a catholic under their God parents, and I know that a baptized isnt a legal document. So I wanted to make the God parents legal if something were to happen to me and my husband, so I figured legal guardianship. So I was wondering how to I establish it? How do I make it legal? I know to go to the court house, but what to ask for? I live in the State of Maryland. I just want to make sure everything is perfect, and my child will have a place to go if anything were to happen, so I do want to make it legal, and not have something that the grandparents have to fight for...

You're very smart to be planning like this - it's something every parent should consider. Ordinarily matters like this are handled in a will. And though people may suggest otherwise, wills are not something that one should attempt as a home sport.
In order to comply with your state's laws, you should consult with an experienced Trusts & Estates attorney in Maryland. It need not be an expensive proposition...but getting it done right can save your children a lot of trouble.
You write a will (it would be smart to have a lawyer help you) and specify that the god parents would be guardians if you were to both die.
You can find guidelines on how to write a will, in which you can appoint the godparents as your choice of guardians. Making a will is the legal way to do this.
Wishing you and your husband much joy and happines with your little one!
