Is it appropriate for a college professor in a Minnesota Public College to suggest attending a bar for happy h

I am 18 and did not attend the happy hour with the professor for what he announced before the close of class would be "Intro to Global Studies Social Hour" Because it was a bar, I am not permitted at 18 to be there and would not be comfortable. The professor gave students extensions, but is not considering me in the same light because I have missed three days. On Thursday July 26, there was a storm and the power was out and there was not a way to get the car out of the garage. July 31st I was sick. On August 1st, the bridge in Minneapolis collapsed and my cousins were missing. We heard on the night of August 2nd that they were okay and since they were camping they did not hear about the bridge collapse until Thursday. I feel my not attending "social hour" should not be used against me. The instructor required all students in his course to complete a form that elicits protected categories of discrimination, like age, and the instructor should have known "social hour" is not okay

In my opinion, it is not appropriate to schedule any college class in a bar, unless you are studying bartending. If you think you are being treatly unfairly because you did not attend this session, take it up with the department head or dean.

As for your absences, most colleges publish attendance policies in a school handbook and/or online. But at 18, you need to realize that not every excuse is a good reason to miss class. Your car is stuck, so you get a ride or take a bus. I can understand being worried for your cousins, but I think you should have attended class and checked in with your family right afterwards. Sometimes when you are not feeling well, you will still need to go to class, or to work, or care for a child, or for a parent.

Three absences in a week is a very bad start to your college career. If you want to get the most out of your education, spend less time pointing fingers and more time in class.

I cannot speak for Minnesota law, but there is no general rule against suggesting to a group of students, some of whom are drinking age, that they might patronize a certain bar. Was the professor at the happy hour? That in and of itself is not illegal, and possibly not even against your school's rules. It might, however, help your assertion that you are being treated unfairly.

I really doubt your professor has committed any crimes. Whether you choose to debase yourself morally (and I skipped enough class to know that your excuses are weak, especially the power outage one) and accuse the professor of encouraging underage drinking/playing favorites is up to you.

Think of this though. You're 18. You screwed up. Whatever the assignment was in "Intro to Global Studies", if you weren't locked in a cage 24 hours a day for the whole period you could have been working on it, you're likely screwed. Life after high school is all about time management. It's also about admitting you made a mistake. Consider that before you try to battle with a professor as a freshman.
i have to agree with above it is time that you learned that attendance is important. Heck, when i was in college the professor could drop you from class if you missed ONE yes ONE class..when i was in class i had a problem with the fact that if i missed any classes i could be kicked form the class but the only accredited daycare open in my town closed an hour before class ended...so i arrenged with the teacher ahead of time that the daycare would drop my son off and he would attend class with me
Now as outrageous as a toddler sitting in on a college class is I did what i had to to make sure that i was in class every day like i should have been
I also have to note that it was discussed with the other students who didn't mind that he sat in the last hour of class as he would just sit there and color and never caused a problem..it even worked to my advantage when the father sued me for full custody because my class mates and the teacher came in to testify about what a well behaved child he was..ok side rant is finished
anyways point im trying to make is you need to go to class no matter what
