I think that is a very good question. I would say that they would have to write an essay on one of the following quotes:

George Washington: (referring to political parties) "I have already intimated to you the danger of Parties in the State, with particular reference to the founding of them on Geographical discriminations. Let me now take a more comprehensive view, & warn you in the most solemn manner against the baneful effects of the Spirit of Party, generally... It agitates the Community with ill founded Jealousies and false alarms, kindles the animosity of one part against another, foments occasionally riot & insurrection. It opens the door to foreign influence & corruption, which find a facilitated access to the government itself through the channels of party passions. Thus the policy and the will of one country, are subjected to the policy and will of another."

Benjamin Franklin: "Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."

Thomas Jefferson: (from the Delcaration of Independence, of course) "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness" (notice he said PURSUIT of happiness, not just happiness).

Although these were quoted over 200 years ago, I think these cover some pretty big issues that politicians will have to face these days.

Again, that was a great question you asked, but I think another good one would be, if voters had to pass an exam before they could vote, what would the question be? There are too many people out there who do not know how government works and what the politician they vote for plans to do on certain issues.

Can you afford to take this job? I ran for our state senate. To take the job would have cost me a bundle. I decided to run because I have enough of an income to get by and a low overhead. Lack of money sets people up to do things that ordinarily they wouldn't do...and once you've done that first 'favor' or taken that 'couple of bucks' or that trip that was 'covered' by a friend, you're on a slippery slope. Women and money have ruined a lot of people in politics..and that kind of ruin can happen to anyone!
Are you willing to be given random lie tests and drug tests?
