Why is marijuana illegal?

i think that it is TOTALLY stupid. because if you do not abuse the drug, then it doesnt do anything to you. so why cant they legalize it and make a limit to it?

Answers:
I read several good points above, and I agree with some.

My reason is that it is not geo-politically profitable for this government, because we are not the major producers of this herb.
A prime example, what the oil once WAS in the middle east. But of course, now we own it all.

if you ask me, alcohol is much worse a drug, but there are no marijuana lobbyists fighting in congress like there are for the alcohol industry, mainly people are ignorant about the benefits of marijuana and are not willing to actually look at factual evidence. Hemp could be used to power our cars, for clothes, and paper. It can grow year round, is natural, and is much better than waiting for a tree to grow and cutting it. It really goes back to the Dupont Company lobbying congress to ban it because hemp jeopardized their business. There should be laws that restrict minors from using it or from people driving under the influence of it, but people should be able to enjoy marijuana without being treated like criminals. Who else doesn't want it legalized? Pharmaceutical companies! Why would you pay for Prozac when you could improve your mood with marijuana without gaining weight or having any other nasty side effects?
Because our goverment is hypocritical. Even if you abuse it, It is no where near as bad as alcohol. It ruins peoples families. Have you ever seen somone on an alcohol withdraw? it is just like heroin withdraw. Plus you can get ALCOHOL POISONING!!! Can you get marijuana poisoning...no.
becuase the mary jane is gonna go up and the docters are gonna say "hey! i get paid but not enough so i think ill sell this stuff to the people who abuse it" idk thats my opinion
Its illegal because the government hasnt figured out how to tax it and regulate it so that they can make money from it. Thats the only true reason.
Well, you can blame a few things on why marijuana is illegal.

The first thing is that when marijuana was first becoming popular in the late 1800s/early 1900s, the general consensus was that drugs such as marijuana caused violence in "negroes," and such, it should be banned.

The reason why it's still banned today has less to do with racism, and more to do with ol' fashion ignorance. Many people are under the impression that marijuana is a very harmful drug that causes a great physical and psychological harm, and tears up families. Oh, wait, you know what else does that? Alcohol. It's a messed up double-standard. The key to it all is moderation. Marijuana is hardly harmful at all if used responsibly and sparingly, and the same goes for alcohol.

I think that sometime within the next twenty to thirty years, marijuana will be legalized, as it well should.
