Lost my California speeding ticket - 1 year ago - what do I do?
I was coming to CA from OR due to a family medical emergency. 40 days at the Neuro ICU and caregiver for another 6 months - totally forgot about speeding ticket. Now moving back to OR and remembered I don't have the ticket and don't know where to begin.
Answers:
Contact the DMV if you don't remember the originating agency who issued you the ticket. Otherwise contact the local courthouse in the county where the ticket was issued.
Oh but the California DMV sure does! You may want to start there!
Not to worry. There is no reciprosity with Oregon for speed violations.
When you don't appear in court, a bench warrant for your arrest will be issued, but you don't live in California, so they will just wait until you cross the line back into California to arrest you, and bring you to court. This sounds great in the movies, but it doesn't happen that way.
Usually, the information stays on the books indefinitely, but the statute of limitations runs out way before you are caught by the California Police (in California) for something like a driving violation.
Don't sweat it. They'll never prosecute, and a few years from now, you can get another speeding ticket in California and do it all over again with no worries.
That's their system.
Get caught speeding again and get another ticket. Than you won't have to worry about it.
