How does medicare work when someone enters a nurseing home.?

We are moving my father into a nurseing home. He is on medicare, which we believe will take care of his bill for the first 60 days.We would like to know when and how medicade will kick in. My father also would like to have what money he has
split up between his 3 children. How can we do this and can we be penalized.

Answers:
Medicare is not responsible for long-term care at a nursing home.

The person's assets must be liquidated and when the person's assets are liquidated (including homes, cars, bank accounts, property, et al), then Medicaid takes over.

It's too late to place your father's assets in any Medicaid trust so either you need to work out a payment plan with the nursing home or take care of your father at home.
