HR.Human Resources..?

How many people agree that HR people are undereducated, immorral legal consultants that are hired by corporations for the soul purpose of protecting major corporations from lawsuits even if it is at the expence of an innocent person who has been victimized by others in a position of authority? Please explain. :-)

personally i feel like HR doesn't do much more then give you the papers when you sign out of a job and come up with the holiday decorations around the office.

I don't hate them or think they're bad people...i just wonder what they're actually doing all day every day

Everyone has a job to do and, just like you, those jobs are done by real people, with real expectations. Corporations are not people and do not have a heart. There policies are in place to protect the company first and foremost. If you owned the company, would you write every policy open-ended and subject to interpretation to every situation involving an employee? Yes, sometimes the policy does seem stupid or completely illogical, but the employees enforcing the policies or informing you of them are usually not to blame. Remember, the type of job and the duties will typically attract certain people with attributes that lend themselves to dealing with confrontation and controversy. Occasionally, you will get a person that gets an ego trip by smacking someone around with a policy manual, but that is usually the exception.

ADDED: After reading your additional comments, I am concerned about you. Obviously what happened to you was very devastating. Regardless of what responsibility, if any, you played in your downfall, I certainly am concerned that you are not handling it as well as you should. Of course, I don't know the details or how long ago this situation occurred. Please find someone to help you deal with this. The anger and bitterness in you will continue to poison you and your outlook on life. Life is still good, find ways to move past and beyond this. Dwelling on the negative will not be the cure you need.
Well. speaking as an MBA with very high moral standards who worked for over 20 years in HR, I would have to say that is a bit of a overbroad generalization. I have worked with some very bright and moral people, although I will say a lot of HR people are not the brightest people in the corporate world.

Yes, a big part of some HR Positions is to protect the company from lawsuits -- but it was always my advice that the best way to do this is to treat people with respect, dignity and fairness. It's naive to think that an HR person's job is to be an advocate for "disgruntled" employees, they are part of management. But all big companies have real lawyers who provide legal advice. And many HR jobs have nothing to do with employee relations issues.

Sounds like you have an ax to grind with a specific HR person, but it is unfair to characterize all HR people as undereducated and immoral.

ps: Yes, most of the power is on the side of the Corporation unless the employee is part of a union and/or under a contract. Most employment situations are "at will" and you can be fired for any reason or no reason as long as no laws were broken. If laws were broken in your situation , you have recourse through the EEOC or the courts. If you have a good case an attorney will take it on contingency -- i.e you don't have to pay the lawyer unles they win your case. They won't charge you for an initial consultation and may put your situation in perspective for you.

However, not knowing the details of your situation, it probably would be better to get over the idea that your life is ruined, move on and find another job. Yeah, I agree many companies don't live up to their "mottos". and after twenty years in corporate America I really have no desire to go back to it, unfortunately that's where a lot of the good paying jobs are...
