Why hasn't the Gov't given mentally ill people the community services promised 40 years ago?
Deinstitutionalization promised support in the community. It's not there. How do we convince the gov't to do this? My son is severely mentally ill and needs community support. Write to your political reps and dept. of Health services and help us. This is a neuro-biological disease not a life choice!

When Reagan was elected, he shut down as many mental facilities as he could (ALL of CA's facilities and many more) and many people ended up on the streets.
As long as people vote Republican, this problem will persist.
it's hard for the government to do much of anything being that were spending a billion or 2 per week on the war in Iraq.
as the government keeps spending more and more it is giving less and less to the states and your state is where community services mostly come from. So what gets cut first ?
funding for those who can't put up a fight.
I feel your pain really I do and I know were lucky to have services for our son who has ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder)
