What does it mean when a person gets sentenced for an amazing amount of years such as 160?

Why don't they just give him life in prison?

Answers:
To prevent parole. Life in prison - means life in prison or until you get paroled.

your state may not have LWOP (life with out parole)...so this certainly covers it.

good luck :)
I assume there is no actual "life in prison." They assign this amount of time because they know it will last all of life, but saying "okay, you have to spend the rest of your life in prison" is not right because it doesn't define how long this will be.
It means that the sentencing judge would like for the person to die in prison. A sentence of "life" means that there is still a possiblity (if only a small one) that the person could one day be paroled.
it means that the person has committed a crime or crimes that are worthy of dieing in prison, and liberals won't let us execute his sorry butt. with a life sentence and a good lawyer you can get out.

libertyx you need to go back and do some checking the conservatives are there to see that the condemned dies the protesters are the liberals. every one i know who supports the death penalty is so far from liberal you can't even see that far right from where you are. the ones i know that oppose the death penalty are the ones who think abortion is a good thing that bush is Hitler, and make bill Clinton look like a conservative.
Well there was one case of a guy that had a heart attack.
And yes they let him go, because he died.
Stupid lawyer helped him get out.
each charge has a different sentence attached to it..
the final sentence is usually an accumulation of all the charges together...
if there was a life sentance given....there is alway's a possability that the convicted would be able to apply for parole...and giving the benefit to the public (who is being kept safe from the offender)..the state want's to ensure that there is no chance of this person leaving the eye of the law...
