Does the United States need more public transportation options?
In many areas, if a person can't drive, they are helpless.
Answers:
Yes most certainly.. and this would also help produce more jobs, and provide more transportation to work. The long term effect could actually help our society depend less on the welfare system in the long run. I think this would provide a very good economical discussion topic for congress.
No, we need less stupid people who can't drive.
yes and yes
its hard to tell when they dont use what we got., i think if everyone used it we would need more
i wish our city had a better one.
Of course we do. the problem is that the auto and oil industry won't allow it. Just look at LA, they once had better public transportation, then the auto industry had it dismantled to force people into buying more cars. True story.
I dunno... our country is the fattest country and i think part of that is because we dont get enough excercise...
It would be very nice if the U.S. were to have more public transportation options. The problem is that Americans were raised knowing that we can own our own vehicles. Most cities in America don't have enough demand for public transportation to make it a cost effective alternative. So in the long run if you can't afford a vehicle and live too far to walk or ride a bike then you are caught between a rock and a hard spot. Cheap alternatives though would be buy a 50cc gas scooter. Not too expensive and very efficient on gasoline. Find someone to car pool with. It's tough but there are still a few different routes you can take.
It would do a lot to ease congestion on the freeways, and greatly reduce our dependancy on foreign oil. Unfortunately, it's not something that the federal government should undertake- it's just too big of a job for the United States to be designing local transportation routes, and it blatantly oversteps the reasonable boundaries of federalism. The problem that keeps coming up, is that nobody wants to pay for it. Municipality after municipality, and state after state, these things come on the ballot every year, and every year they get turned down. Everybody wants public transportation, but nobody wants their taxes to go up, and nobody wants it running through their backyard.
