Why should abortion be legal, just so that women won't use a coat-hanger to kill a baby?
Most pro-choice arguments always say.. if you make abortion illegal, women will use a coat-hanger and harm themselves..
So, this argument assumes that it is okay to kill a baby, but not okay for the mother to harm herself with a coat-hanger in the process of killing the baby.. what's wrong with this assumption here?

I actually leave the door open to legalized abortion at least in some cases. But I agree with you that protecting the woman from harming herself is an absurd reason for legalizing abortion.
By the same logic, it ought to be illegal for us to lock our doors because a thief might injure himself while forcing it open. If an act should be illegal on moral grounds, consideration for the perpetrator's well-being are out of bounds.
The question of abortion legality should be firmly centered on the rights of the mother versus the rights of the unborn child. I think that reasonable people can disagree on how these rights balance. This is a major reason why the matter should never have been settled at the Federal level (not to mention that the Supreme Court clearly over-stepped its Constitutional authority in Roe v Wade).
What happened to your last question?
It is a metaphor.
The following is not.
Criminalizing abortion will cause some women to attempt the practice on their own or with assistance. This can lead to problems for the mother. Also, some mothers will give birth to children they can't afford to take care of, or don't want to. Doesn't sound like a good reason to legalize a form of murder, I always thought responsibility was a good solution.
I am pro-choice. I think that women should have the option to get an abortion or not because it's their body. You and I shouldn't be able to dictate whether or not they should have to keep the child. Being pro-choice, I've yet to hear that "women will use a coat-hander and harm themselves" - but I don't think that we should take that choice from women. It's not your body, and it is not my body so why should we be able to tell them if they should keep it or not?
There are other ways besides a coat-hanger and don't forget women need men to get them into this position which is probably a small matter you like to forget. Think Richly indeed, Think Not At All more like it.
Yeah, and condoms.
Ps. My best friend is Sherlock Holmes - geddit ?
Pps. I'm not entirely anti you opinion actually, I think abortion has got to be one of the most awful decisions any woman has to make, I'm aware that some girls use it as contraception which I think is appalling I just don't think it should be outlawed altogether although I'm always open to persuasion.
What Bob T has said has made me think already ... he could be right.
and finally, sorry I was rude - it just wasn't funny was it :-(
Right and we should make drugs, rape and murder legal - people are going to do them no matter what right, why not make it legal?
they use the lamest excuses.
Tired of hearing it.
They could simply give the child up for adoption.
This is the 21st century.
How is something as barbaric as abortion still around.
Some people are stuck in the Middle Ages I guess.
.
The coat hanger is one reason. When a woman is desperate enough she'll use any means available, even black market butchers. It'll only encourage illegal abortions & more deaths to both woman & fetus.
Personally, I am anti-abortion, as are my wife and most of my friends. However, in certain cases, such as rape, incest or health of the mother, then of course abortion should be an OPTION.
I believe adoption is the answer, but law makers and the media prefer DISTRACTION to actually fixing a problem.
Anyone who uses Abortion as birth control, should be forcefully sterilized, in my opinion. We need to regulate parenting, maybe institute a licensing program. That way, less unwanted children= less aborition, less abandonment, less child murders.
Abortion should be legal for many reasons - and not the one you stated here. Other ones you've probably heard: women have the right to do with their bodies what they want. Also, I think the case of rape goes without saying. But what about, its effect in dropping crime rates?
According to a study and book by Steven J. Levitt (winner of the John Bates Clark Medal) there is a correlation between the 1990's crime drop and the controversial Roe vs. Wade decision. The theory goes that the fetuses being aborted are done by women who don't have the money, education, or experience to raise a child, and that women themselves are capable of calculating whether or not they are capable to raise a baby when it is conceived. So, when we hit the 1990's, when these children who would more likely become criminals were coming of "criminal age" crime dropped because they weren't there. There's a lot more to it then that obviously, but I suggest you read the article, its at least interesting even if you don't believe it.
Oh, and the other interesting thing is that statistics show that women who abort children when they are younger DO end up having those children later done the line - so its not hindering population growth either.
The coathanger is a metaphor for a dangerous and life-threatening way for a woman to have an illegal abortion. The idea is that some women will have abortions whether they are legal or not, and pro-choice people believe that women should have a safe and legal way to have an abortion if they choose to terminate their pregnancies.
Abortion should remain legal so that republicans can keep using the anti-abortion rant to get votes. Everybody with half a brain knows that the republicans will never to anything to make abortions illegal because they have them too and there would be millions of people that would no longer have any reason to vote for them.
<satire> I am still of the opinion that abortion should be legal right up to the age of 16. Children have become ferral and need kulling! Teach the greedy, lazy, ungrateful little b**Tards a lesson. A few fatal beatings should be enough to change their behaviour! </satire>
