Pigeon killing in LA?

I heard on the news today they are trying to controlly pigeon population by giving them pills with seeds to make them unfertile. Isnt this killing and considered abusing birds? where are the animal rights people now?
and this is technically abortion, this is allowed? where is the government now?

Answers:
Actually, it would likely be cheaper, much longer in effect, and better overall for the environment if they simply do what some of the European cities are doing now. Build a loft for the birds where they breed; destroy the eggs; let the birds feed only in selected areas.

As the food decreases, the natural carrying capacity of the range decreases and the fewer number of birds will be there. It's cheaper for the city in the long run if they don't have to fork out money all the time for chemical pills for the birds - yeah, they have to pay someone to take care of the loft areas, but it would likely be cheaper than going with the pills/drugs over time.

Also, we wouldn't have to worry about the problems they had, e.g., in London. Apparently, birth control hormones secreted in women's urine got into the Thames and led to some birth defects in the fish there. Tossing eggs doesn't lead to environmental damage.

No this is not any different than spade or neutering your pets.

It is a humane way of dealing with the pigeon population and if you read more into it you would see that the animal rights activists were the ones who suggested using them.

Yes it is allowed and the government has already done tests and approved the drug.
No, its birth control. Pigeons are considered an official bird 'pest', just like cockroaches or ants, and they are not protected by the Migratory Bird Act treaty or any other law. This technique is quite humane, and does not hurt or harm the pigeons in any way. And, since the eggs are never fertile, no embryos are killed. As long as no other birds eat the pills, It is a much better alternative to shooting, netting, poisoning, and killing pigeons.
