If this is true

First off your mother was way out of line for slapping you over something like this! Second I believe it's not the breed we have to worry about it's the upbringing of the dog. Last but not least, depending on where you live if you have to sign a contract and within that contract it states you can NOT have a certain type of breed then yes you could get kicked out, but I'm sure they would warn your mother to get rid of the dogs first.

Edited to add

If your dog got blamed for biting someone have them try to match your dogs teeth to the bite marks ;)

Unfortunately, your mom is correct to be paranoid. (But not for slapping you.) Numerous cities have passed breed-specific laws. Some insurance companies refuse to insure those who own dogs of particular breeds. And pit bulls are always on those lists.
I think if your dog is a pit bull, that's great. It's just as great as if it were any other breed, you shouldn't have to be afraid of an entire breed of dogs. A lot of people make their pit bulls mean dogs, so that's why your mom didn't want everybody to know. Some people just assume all of them are mean. I think your mom shouldn't have asked you to lie about it, but I think you need to talk to her about it. I know most of the pit bulls out there are perfectly nice, just like other dogs.
A pit bull (even a mix) is decernable by anyone. It would be hard to hide that fact.
Your mom is trying to protect the dogs and your home.

However, I don't think slapping you was a good way to get the point across.
Unfortunately, there are enough irresponsible Pit bull breeders / owners that have raised a fearful consciousness in America. With a problem with inbreeding, fighting and neglect, this breed gets a bad reputation. Because they have powerful jaws and can be so loyal as to defend their masters or off springs to the death, Underbellies (drug people, dog fighter, etc) have chosen this breed. Due to an extremely large quantity of attacks and deaths associated with the breed, John Q. Public is always on the attack.
