Temporary custody of my friend's kids?

A friend of mine wants to go out of town temporarily (3 months) to work, but she wants her kids to stay in school here.. How can I do this? I wanna be able to deal with their school and medicaid and doctors and stuff, but don't have funds to hire an attorney.. is there anything her and I can do without the court system? HELP!>!>!>!>

Answers:
You may be able to have a temporary power of attorney drawn up by a paralegal in your area.

You could just ask them how to get granted temporary guardianship...shouldn't cost anything at all with the mothers consent.
i have no idea, but i would never leave my children (if i REALLY loved them) for that long.
Short a few details, ie. situation with the children's father, however a simple letter of Guardianship should handle the problem. I suppose if one was worried about legal technicalities you could get the letter drafted and signed at a lawyers office. I think if you went with your friend to the children's school and doctor's office and she purposely introduced you, explained the situation and showed them the signed letter that it may "legitimize" your standing better. A little effort before the fact can make things go a whole lot smoother during the 3 month absence.
IMHO.
You are best to do it out of court, as they are nothing but trouble and will only drag you into a system that you really don't want not to mention the cost!
