Can my boss terminated me while I'm approve to be out of town?
I was working in a computer store in Vancouver from Jan 07 till now. I was a part time cashier there. so just 2 weeks before, I asked the boss to approve me to go for a vacation with my family and he let me. so a few days before, I email them and tell them when can i work again. I got this email today and he said that he already found someone to replaced me! Can he actually do that? without notice? He gave us really flexible hours, so we can choose which day to go to work. can he use this reason to fire me because I sometimes can't work the days that he schedule for me but on the other hand, he didn't really care? and there was a case like me before, the other cashier went for vacation for even longer period of time but she didn't get fire (she is the manager's gf). they hold the position for them! and I do more than a cashier do too. I did the graphic design for them, logo and all kinds of design stuff.they fired me after i finished all the design stuff? this is unfair! what can i do?
Answers:
yes, your boss can fire you when it comes to the scheduling. Not to be mean, but if you can't work your scheduled days "sometimes", whether he shows that he cares or not, its not cool. This girlfriend of his is a concern, she shouldn't be favored on the job. However, if you completed all these tasks for them and they kept you only until completed, it sounds like they were using you. Talk to a lawyer to learn your rights or contact the corporate head office of this store to notify them of nwhats going on.
If you are in an "at will" state in USA, your boss can terminate you at any time for no reason. Hopefully someone can answer who knows if this is also the law in Canada.
Can you think of a better time?
