Person or possesions what do you think is more important?
In the uk I can never work out how come a criminal can get 2,3,4 years for drugs or theft yet 6 months for causing death by dangerous driving or 3 months for rape? am I the only one that thinks the British justice system sucks? I am British by the way
Answer:
Agreed, Lita. No sensible benchmarks laid out esp for drugs and serious crimes leading to death. Some countries even give the death penalty for drug trafficking.
I consider jail sentences of anything less than 6mths ineffective - the culprit won't learn valuable lessons in that short a time. And going to jail for 7days or 1month? It's a pure waste of time on administration by the prisons.
A hefty fine or made to do certain hours of community service is a much better alternative. No special privileges just because you are a celebrity or happen to be the child of the judge,Minister,Sultan or the Head of State.
First world countries should begin to hold a World Conference to revamp the current legal systems that have so many loop-holes and so much unfairness.
Hi there Lita, You are so right! There is no comparison.people will always be much more important than possessions. I am sure that the majority agree with you that both the British criminal justice system and the family courts suck big time!!
i don't live there - are women safe to walk at night? they aren't here.
Well, I guess that explains (partially) why the U.S. criminal justice system is equally as pathetic- ours was modeled on yours!
Maybe Saudi Arabia has a few good theories on deterring crime: amputation of a hand for theft, taking you out into the middle of the desert and forcing you to walk back to "civilization" determines if you are convicted or acquitted of a DUI- not such bad idea, I'd say...
I don't know the British justice system very well, but if it's anything like America, most of the lighter sentencing for crimes like reckless driving or rape, is because the prosecutors make deals with the guilty parties.
If they plead guilty, they get a break. Some times this is done to keep from having long drawn out trials.
I agree with your disgust tho.
Some of drug cases in which they get more time are probably repeat offenders too, or were caught while in the commission of another crime.
Well, the US is the same. We probably inherited the insanity from Britton.
Hell, in the United States there is a shoplifter named Leandro Andrade who has a life sentence. Google him.
Sounds like here in South Africa as well i wish to God they will bring back the death penalty so criminals can do the whole time not just a little because the prison is full
hi lita ,,,,,i agree with wot you say,,, i live in england ,,,but the criminal justice in any country has downfalls ...i think life for a life .chop your hands off if you steal ....get my drift ..
well the only thing you should know is that even if you caught sme1 in crime he/she is still innocent until proven guilty, you may kill but without proving it beyond every reasonable thought you cant be condemmed, so it all boise down to the person's attorney, get a good one and whoever kill ur relative will do 20 or more years.
People and actions against them should, in my opinion, be punished far more severely thank pure monetry crime. That said my belief is that any crime should be more harshly punished, not only to deter but to keep the criminal off the streets for longer. Either way crime is reduced.
Britain has no fixed sentancing code, it is left to the Lord Chancellor to issue "guidance" to the Judges and whilst I don't think that every burglary or rape should be treated the same I do think that sensible minimum sentences should apply in every case.
For example Burglary - each offense 1 year BUT if the house is trashed at the same time 2 years, BUT if the value of goods is say over £5000, 3 years.
Assault- cuts and bruises 1 year, stitches and scar 2 years, broken bones or deliberate damge done after the vitim is down 5 years.
Death by dangerous driving 5 years for each victim!
Murder-life
and so on.
The tables should be published in advance so that the criminals have knowledge of what they are likely to suffer so they have no excuse for sentencing appeals.
No time off for good behaviour but extra time for bad in say 6 month slots.
Build more prisons on the American method, boxes which slot together when brought to site. They should be high security, one person one cell, comfortable, warm, dry and clean. Existing prisons which do not meet these criteia should be re-built.
Society would be a better safer place, but no Government will ever have the guts to adopt what I believe the majority would applaud as a solution.
